The Route from Assisi to Santiago
Starting from Assisi in Italy, I will walk north along the Via Francigena, part of the ancient pilgrimage route between London and Rome. From Sarzana I will branch off along the Italian Riviera, crossing the border into France before following the Cote d’Azur and heading west , passing through Arles, Montpellier, Toulouse, Auch, and Pau. Then I cross the Pyrenees into Spain along the Camino Aragonese to Puenta La Reina, where I rejoin my 2002 route along the Camino Frances, and finishing at Santiago de Compostella.
Although the map gives a distance of 2101 kms, this is based on straight line distances between major points, and the actual walking distance is nearly 20% longer.
Major cities along the route: Assisi, Montepulciano, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Pietrasanta, La Spezia, Cinque Terre, Levanto, Genoa, San Remo, Menton, Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Arles, Montpellier, Toulouse, Pau, Pamplona, Puenta La Reina, Burgos, Leon and Santiago de Compostella.
